I really really need your help

For the past few days I have been in contact with Mr. Richard Mullins a school teacher in Brookeland Tx. Brookeland Tx, is an incredibly "Conservative" area of Texas, and only 16 miles up the road from Jasper Tx. the scene of several incidents of racial violence and murder. Mullins has been the victim of a smear campaign and a slew of unethical practices, based solely on his religious and political beliefs. I have received numerous calls today from area parents, and concerned local residents who feel that Mr. Mullins is a good teacher, who has encouraged and inspired his students to think critically, and independently and is innocent of all charges, both spoken and written. In fact the administration of Brookeland High School made attempts to urge students to sign a list of alleged chargers against Mr. Mullins of which over 100 students out of 103 refused to sign. The students attempted to present to the Board of education a petition in support of Mr. Mullins and refuting any charges of inappropriate language made against him. The Principal of Brookeland High School, not only refused to take this petition to the board but forbade the students from such actions. Mr. Mullins is being railroaded by a School board of which all of those who support his removal are members of the same church. A church who's pastor has openly called for there to be only Christian teachers in the Brookeland school district. Currently the Mid-South Peace and Justice Center is in contact with several local and national civil rights organizations in Texas, who will be contacting Mr. Mullins, investigating this situation and offering their support. But if anyone out there knows any other resource that can be brought in to stop this injustice, I ask you please contact us, and forward this out to them. at Brad@midsouthpeace.org The following is a statement of events from Mr. Mullins, some names and details were redacted by me.

I, Richard Mullens, have been a teacher in the state of Texas since 1971. I have never received a negative comment, complaint, or write-up during this period of time. On the contrary, I have received recognition for my teaching and the test scores of my students. No matter what district I've taught in, my students have always excelled in the state mandated tests. I currently teach in Brookeland, TX, a small rural district about 16 miles north of Jasper, TX. I've taught at Brookeland for the past 6 years. I've been in my current position as US history, government, and economics teacher for 3 years.

These past 2 years have been an exciting time for me as a history and government teacher. My classes have followed the primary and election campaigns. My senior class last year, with the aid of the superintendent Lana Comeaux, was able to travel to Beaumont, TX to see Bill Clinton make a stump speech on behalf of his wife Hillary Clinton. In class we followed the primary campaign using Newsweek magazine and Junior Scholastic magazine to keep us informed about the issues. We had passionate debates about the issues and the candidates. It was obvious to my class that I supported Barack Obama. I allowed all students to express their opinions, as long as they did not include racial slurs or non-factual information. On occasion, I had to correct misinformation that was expressed by students. For example, that Barack Obama was un-American, that he did not say the pledge, and that he was a terrorist. After Barack Obama's election, I was looking forward to being able to share the inauguration with my students by letting them watch it on TV in my classroom. But instead, I found myself at home suspended from my job.

On November 7th, at a basketball game that was supposed to be our homecoming scrimmage, I sat at the scores table as a coach with Lana Comeaux, the superintendent. I was not allowed to coach because we would be in violation of UIL rules. Lana Comeaux at that time told me she was under pressure from the school board and they were looking for her to resign. She said that my name was also on the list of people that the board wanted to resign or fire. I asked why, and she said that a school board member had expressed to her that he believed I was an atheist and a liberal. She asked me if I was an atheist and I refused to answer the question. I said, "I won't play this game. I didn't know you had to take a religious test to be a teacher in the state of Texas." Nothing was said after that point, although there was a lot of tension among the other coaches about whether they would be able to keep their jobs or not, because she also told them that many of them were on the list.

Then on January 7th, a student in my classroom in second period left my class, went to the Principal's office, and told him that there was an inappropriate discussion in my classroom. I was informed by the principal, Richard Turner, that I needed to talk to her mother because she was very upset. Her mother came to class on January 7th, came to the school January 7th, very upset. She made some threats to me in the hallway. And then on January 8th, Mr. Turner informed me that I needed to call the parent, Mrs. Lowe. On January 9th, I had Vicki Smith, the school secretary, call "REDACTED" on my behalf to arrange a conference at 10:35 Monday, January 12th. Monday the 12th, I met with REDACTED and School Principal Richard Turner in his office. REDACTED was very angry. She accused me of being an atheist, saying I was too liberal, and that I allowed the students to talk about inappropriate things in the classroom. I told her that occasionally students would get on topics and say things, but I was unable to censor them before they were able to say them. She said that I called her daughter a name and I denied the accusation. But then she said that I didn't believe in god and shouldn't be teaching. She also said that she had spoken to 3 other board members who agreed with her that I shouldn't be teaching because I was too liberal and I was an atheist.

On January 15th, there was a board meeting. Nothing was on the agenda concerning me. During the open forum, several audience members spoke to their concerns that I was an atheist and I was too liberal. On January 16th, I was called to Mr. Richard Turner's office (my principal), and he informed me that I had been put on administrative leave with pay. The reasons, as stated to me by Mr. Turner at the time, were that I was accused of being an atheist and teaching atheism in the classroom, and I was too liberal. On January 23rd, Mr. Turner and members of the board met behind closed doors concerning my suspension and allegations that were directed at me. On January 24th, I received a certified letter from Mr. Turner that stated that the causes for my suspension apparently had been changed to inappropriate contact with students and comments. He admonished me in the letter for having contact with students who had text-messaged me during my first week of suspension, but I had not received any administrative directive, or anything in writing, prior to that time telling me I could not have contact with students. On January 26th, I called my lawyer REDACTED, with ATTE, and informed him of my situation that I was put on administrative leave with pay, pending an investigation.

I later had conversations with parents and a person who lives in the community, who informed me that the principal had met with the minister of the local church and had discussed my suspension with him. I also later received information from REDACTED,a "SCHOOL EMPLOYEE-POSITION REDACTED", that the minister was now subbing at the school and that he had heard that he would be taking my position, or if I returned he would be co-teaching with me.

There have been a number of rumors in our community now concerning inappropriate behavior: high school girls coming to my class to supposedly smoke marijuana, all kinds of accusations made by the members of the missionary baptist church at which this minister is the preacher. In the January 24th letter from Mr. Richard Turner, my principal, I was also informed that my suspension had been extended indefinitely.

Sincerely,
Richard Mullens

WOW! How embarrassing for the school as well as for the teacher! AND, how tragic for the cause of Christ! Mark me down as standing with the teacher/coach. The preacher should, in my opinion, stick to preaching and leave the coaching to others. He and his opinions, evidently absorbed by some of his members, are stone age opinions. As a pastor for over 40 years, I am always astounded by the lack of understanding a love showered on the public by pastors and members of such churches. The pastor should read the chapters in my book ABCs Of Ministry encouraging fellow pastors to realize that Christ counts all as precious, valuable, and deserving of respect. Those with different views within the congregation of such churches have to hide their true feelings for fear of being considered second-class Christians, or worse! And by the way, MY NAME is David E. Holt - no relation as far as I know from the David Holt of this leading comment.

I can not believe this is happening to Mr.Mullens. I am a senior finishing up school in Brookeland and I have to say that our school is one of the most arrogant and hypocritical schools I have ever seen. Richard has made it clear on several occasions that he is not atheist. Our community however, is in the middle of the bible belt. Being a small community of only around 400 year-round residents, many of out board members are deeply involved in the area churched. Not surprisingly, they also go to the same church. The accusations that Richard teached Atheism in his classroom is nothing less than backwash of the mouth. Occasionaly, we have discussions on different religions and their beleifs. As for being a liberal, he is not. He is very involved in the process of election. By far, without arguement, Mr.Mullens is the greatest and most informant teacher I have ever had. The accusations presented against him are false. The girl who filed the report, believe it or not, came to school drunk and was allowed to "sleep it off" in the principals office. No phone calls to the authorities or the girls parents were made. Then, two weeks ago, the same girl brought a taser to school and tased a girl who had given her premission. All I can hope is that justice is served and that the real culprit(s) are served. Please help this man if you can. He may very well loose his career to a girl, mother, and preacher who think their beliefs are better than his. Spread the word for him if you can, he really needs the support. The phone number for the school is (409)-698-9792 Thank you, Jesse Bentley

I am extremely upset with the Mr. Mullens situation. I am also a senior at Brookeland, and I have been a student of Mr. Mullens for the past five years. He has been the best teacher I have ever had the privlage of being taught by. The school is just looking for a witch to burn at the stake because church got boring last Sunday. The girl who made the accusations against Mr. Mullens is also trying to get several students kicked out of Brookeland for supporting Mr. Mullens. This past Friday she had the police officer talk to them because they were "harrassing her" even though two of the accuse haven't spoken to her since Mullen was suspended. She has said to me and several other students "I got Mr. Mullens fired, I can get them kicked out too." This is beyond stupid even for Brookeland or as I refer to it, our backwater redneck school. Mr Mullens is a good person and deserves so much better than the injustice that has been served to him. I am going to help him as much as I can, because I'll be damned if I'm to just sit back and let them screw him over. pass this along Because he needs all the help he can get.

So, this is what Brookeland resorted to picking and pulling because of religion...I have gone to Brookeland several years.. In addition, I can say countless times religion has come about within other teacher’s rooms and nothing ever said .. Preaching the bible while we were in class.. How is this not wrong?? Nobody ever got in trouble as Jesse said our town is small and focused upon one religion. And I know for a fact I was taunted by several people over the issue not once did a teacher say a word ..Several teachers have spoke of god to us during class but yet Mullens is the only one who is prosecuted because he is "atheist" so therefore he is a horrible person without any faith... A religion is a simple beliefs and if him being atheist means he cant teach at Brookeland ...Then So be it I now know not to tred waters in Brookeland I.S.D anymore..Not that it was a joyride to begin with...Now me being a previous long-term student; also, Brookeland is such a small town I know many of the teachers and school board members. None of which have the right to point fingers or judge...I have heard a many of girls talking about how unnatural turner is around females-Around me, so offering numbers is a crime then why is he the principle??Look people my point is Richard Mullens is a great person; an outstanding teacher, understanding and he has a great sense of humor his belief’s mentioned or not should be no others concern. You have your own regardless, so does the rest of the world.. Why does it matter? He never once pulled a gun out like "Nucca be atheist or imma shout yo a$$" nah he was a great teacher...I have proof look at my TAKS scores during the yr I had him flying colors... Best English teacher I ever had, but hes still a bad person. To me religion is basically the same as race..If you cannot tolerate your child having an atheist teacher you are stuck in the past loss of religion is becoming more and more popular. Some people do not have the same beliefs. How is that a crime how is this worth a mans career? Much less, his life he will have to live this down for the rest of his teaching career all because a couple Skeez want to stroke their ego.. Doesn’t it look a bit funny? To me this is a mere case of 'the little girl who cried wolf' in her report, she mentioned a mini skirt I was almost kicked out for wearing a skirt 3 in' above my knees, this girl brought a taser… Are you fucking kidding me???? The girl gets to sleep in school while drunk??? This should be fucking headline news. If it had been me in that office I guarantee you, I would have been expelled on the scene Kicked out what ever you may. This is yet another case of picking favorites. Better yet, it is a hate crime.

WoW! Firstly this is incredable...How could a school bring religion into the school? Mr. Turner going to a pastor I know a student who actually got to smoke a ciggerette in the priciples office with him...A student was called stupid by thier own teacher for beining athiest...Mrs.Sussie isn't even qualified to be a principle, yet she still has a job. This is a hate crime; the sad part is this is'nt the first time for this go on....so Yes Another parent of a 2 female student supports the save mullens act...That girlyes she have seen things her way but she did not think about what this would do to his career...She ruined a perfectly nice and caring mans career....And at school she is the victim???I think MRS.Turner Mr.Turner need to pulll thier heads out thier asss and addmitt this girl was in the wrong and so where they..And now this man Can't see his students who love their teacher love everyone of them...all grades all classes... The nicest teacher in the school gone over some trap trying to get attion. My daughter was called ghetto by Mrs.Jett talked with my child of sex and small her tits were her sleeping nude..ext so is Beining athiestMrs Trayhan saw a student smoking a ciggerette on school grounds, didnt turn him in and even something about it later to the boy and my daughter..Smoking MJ in school ????? IN a building with smoke alarms in every room????

I would like to start this comment off by saying I am a student in brookeland isd and have had mr mullens as my history teacher since junior high.I am now a junior in school. Mr Mullens is a great teacher. Since when should we start judging teachers by their religious beliefs? What were dealing with here is not fair. They have jumped from one thing to the next here. Whats happening here is not just. I have learned so much from Mullens the past few years.

The young lady who made these accussations against him has also involved me and a few other students in this saying we have been "harassing and threatning her"? When we have not said one word to her. But she goes around making jokes like " i got a teacher kicked out i can get so and so student kicked out?" Then she goes around talking about pulling people out of their house and whopping their ass? Pulling out of school the other day her mother flipped me off as i was pulling out of the driveway. Now seriously, what kind of parent flipps a 17 yr old girl off. The next day i was called to the office along with a few other people, i had to sit in a room while a cop told me not to threaten other girls. When no one has said no word to her nor anyone else, But when i tried to explain my self, it seemed everyones mind was already made about who did what. Pretty much no matter what i said would help.

This girl had no charges against her for coming to school drunk?! How is that possible.
Also carried a taser to school.
Shes allowed to get away with all this?

Whats going on is not fair. Im going to continue to stand up for Mr mullens. And i will stand up for myself and my friends thats being wrongly accused of this matter.

If you disagree with me fine. Im not doing anything wrong. And i have a right to say this, freedom of speech! So if a teacher at school has something to say about it, go right ahead.

Mr mullens many students are behind you 100%. Ill never ever forget you. You taught kids to be different, think differently Not many people are like that now days.

I hope all this works out for you.

Sincerely, michelle Ferguson.

This is ridiculous.....How can they bring religion into school? I went to Brookeland ISD for three years and I had Mr. Mullens as my history teacher. He was a very good teacher and as far as talking about religion is concerned, this topic would be brought up in other classes too but nobody ever took an action against that, so why are they making it such a big deal now.
Brookeland has few close mind people who would refuse to accept anything they don’t want to believe in but never thought that they would take it that far. I was different too, being the only Muslim girl...There were few times when few people passed on remarks about me belonging from a terrorist family and having a link with that but I always ignored those comments because I knew that they had a problem within themselves.
But as far as this issue is concerned, Mr. Mullems should definitely be brought back to school. He was a good teacher and he doesn't deserve for anything like that.
Let me know if I could help in anyway.

I may not go to brookeland School now but i am apart of it. I went to school at brookeland for five years straight and to tell you the truth i knew something like this was going to happen. Brookeland is a school who doesnt believe in giving people chances and taking chances. Mr. Mullens has been and always will be the best teacher at brookeland high school no matter what. I looked up to him like a father and didnt critize him for having different beliefs. Like youve read, he has taught thier for many years and not once he has got into any trouble yet right when they hear hes athiest, they fire him without hesistation. Mr. Mullens has right to believe in what ever the hell he wants and if someone has a problem with that, then let it be. But he is the sweetest and kindest man you will meet.

I truly dont believe that mullens said anything that would hurt another human being, yes he has his moments where he tries to set people straight. but thats when immature students are being racist and trying to go against his teaching rights.
Im behind you mr. mullens 100% of the way.
tell me what i can do to help,

Seperation of church and state.

I'm sorry, but what these people have done is illegal. I am not just commenting this blog, I will be LETTING EVERYONE KNOW. I'm calling PBS, I'm calling the NAACP, I'm calling our local Fox, CBS, and NBC newscasters, I am writing the Jasper Newsboy and Houston Chronicle. This cannot be allowed to happen.

And a note for all students of BHS. The school CAN NOT tell you you can't petition, picket, or have a sit in, as long as it's peaceful. You have the rights as an American do so. I suggest you practice them to the fullest.

I am so pissed. I was proud to be a graduate of Brookeland High School, but as far as I'm concerned, THEY CAN HAVE THE DAMN DIPLOMA BACK.

Very well written Jesse. That made me proud. I’m Michelle Taylor a former substitute at BISD. This is a sad day my friends. I too am a God fearing Christian. That being said, I don't want anyone else to tell me what, who or how I have to believe. Id like to point out a few things if I may. We have a constitution set in place to uphold laws that are in our best interest. The first being...Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. Unless Mr. Mullens is holding someone responsible for their beliefs being different from his, then the only wrong doings are the people who are trying to hold Mr. Mullens responsible for his own beliefs. It is a pitiful time when we allow people to be black balled because they don't fall in line with the majority. For this I am truly sorry. This kind of thing bothers me to my core. I am ashamed to know the people in charge of this religious persecution. This is discrimination too blatant to be ignored. Now, Having been given the chance to say all of that...Id like to say this. If you need help making picket signs, or T shirts saying, God loves Mr. Mullens and God wishes you would too. Just give me a call. I gotchew. 409-586-1234

Wtf? My name is Donna Samuel. I'm a former student at bhs. I recently relocated, causing me to change schools. I was completely shocked when i heard Mr. Mullens had been fired. I had already knew about the suspension because I was present during the time it happened.

When i heard about the incident, i was surprised at the situation. But wasn't surprised about who started it. The girl who made the acusations is pshyco. She has no respect for people, feelings, or morals. Mullens is by far the best teacher and one of the best people i have ever met. He's always there for his students whenever they need help with school work or just help in general. If i were still at BHS, all hell would be raised. He is nothing but nice and supportive. At times when people would down our cheerleaders, he would encourage us to take the downing as motivation.

I don't know if the school has heard. But church and state is seperate! You CANNOT fire someone because of their religious beliefs. What kind of people are you to fire a man because of his morals and values? They need to be put in their place. And this lacy lowe girl, should watch what she says. She is in no place to talk to people all badass like she's gonna kick their ass. In the school handbook, it states you can not be under the influence of alcohol, drugs, etc. during school hours. All offenders will be prosecuted. Is she some kind of exception to this? Hell, well you know if that would have been someone else they would have had the law called on them and get kicked out of the school.

Something had to be done. This injustice is outrageous. As well as pitiful.

Get your act together, BISD.
-Donna

(I COULDNT GET IT TO MAKE ME A NAME SO IM USING ALLASON'S!!)

Hi, I’m Haley Powell a senior at Brookeland High School. I moved to Brookeland in the 8th grade and that was my first year to have Mr. Mullens in fact that year I had him for English and for History. He has probably been the best teacher I have ever had. His teaching method sticks right with me.

I totally disagree with everything that is going on at out school. If anyone really thought all these inappropriate things about Mr. Mullens were going on, they should have had a talk and gave him a chance before all the sudden assuming all this BS and up and suspending him while adding more and more things during the process.

This man has a sense of humor that would brighten your day and make you want to learn in his class. I know one thing and this is a fact before I had Mr. Mullens I hated history after having him I love it. I have learned more about history in the last four years than I have in my whole life. I passed my TAKS test with flying colors. He taught me exactly what I needed to know, I studied and successfully passed it. Thanks for that Mr. Mullens.I love coming to school and still do to see everyone and carry a bright smile on my face but you only brightened my day more we need you back!!!.

You are the shizzit and seriously if you don’t come back that’s crap unless you don’t want to which is understandable.

Now, I would like to say something about the woman who made such a big deal about all this stuff in the first place THAT B**** KILLED MY DOG AND I HAVNT FORGOT ABOUT THAT. YES, YOU TAMMY LOWE!

I AM HIGHLY DISSAPOINTED THAT THEY WOULD TAKE AN IDOTS WORD ON SOMETHING LIKE THAT. In reality people this woman is on probation she is dangerous and we take her word is what blows my mind. She is on probation and still allowed in the school house knowing this woman is frustrated (because her daughter is supposedly getting so much criticism) and allowed to make faces and flipping off students and this is a CLOSED campus. And you tell me this dangerous psychopath is still allowed on campus. UNBELIEVEABLE.

AND FOR THE REST OF THE PEOPLE WHO ARE TWO FACED AND FOLLOWING AFTER THE WAY OTHER PEOPLE FELT THAT is BULL BC WHEN MR. MULLENS WAS HERE YOU SURE WOULD FIND you people SAYIN HE WAS AWESOME UNTIL THIS WENT DOWN AND ALL THE SUDDEN HES SUCH A BAD PERSON GET A LIFE learn to be yourself regardless of what’s happening .!

FUTURE REFRENCE BE A LEADER NOT A FOLLOWER.

& PREACHER NEEDS TO PREACH HES NOT A SCHOOL TEACHER SO PREACH. THANKS. By all means I am not being disrespectful but if you had any care in the world people you wouldn’t try and ruin a mans life if you are a true Christian. REGARDLESS OF WHAT YOU THINK EITHER WAY IT GOES WHAT HE BELIEVES OR WHAT HE DOESN’T GOD LOVES MR. MULLENS TOO SO REMEMBER THAT NEXT SUNDAY…!

Board member's, REMEMBER: everybody has ghost in their closet so think about that on the next meeting. :)

ALSO WHILE IM AT IT about MR. MULLENS, he HAS NEVER EVER MADE ME FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE IN ANY WAY SO B4YOU START POINTING FINGERS GO LOOK AROUND AT THE REST OF THE STAFF THEN START…. THANKS AGAIN.

Mr. Mullens WE WILL NOT GIVE UP.. YOU HAVE HELPED MY LIFE NOT HURT IT SO I WILL NOT FIGHT AGAINST YOU.

And for everybody BE PROFESSIONAL .. I WILL TRY AND NOT POINT ANYBODY OUT ON THAT TAKE IT HOW YOU WANT….

Thanks for doing what you can, but if we, the graduates, students, and residents of Brookeland don't do something about this travesty, and I mean travesty, it will be almost impossible to get anyone else to. Write everyone, call everyone, petition and make your voice heard.

These ignorant people are the ones that help make our community look bad, stand up for yourself and do something more! The internet is a great place for this sort of thing, I've spoken to three different news stations in the past hour that seem interested enough to look into things, all I had to do was a run a search on google for some phone numbers. This is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY!!!

thorrocco said...

Logan, I'm working hard. Have contacted news media, newspapers, and have started a group on Facebook which is starting to get attention from people I don't even know. Yes, your right about the freedom of petition but the school is still raining down hard on anyone that is trying to do anything with this at school. The principal has said that anyone making petions or being involved in petions is strictly prohibited. Feel free to call me tommorrow after 5. 698-9792 Thanks for your support and that of anyone else, Jesse

Brad Watkins said...

Logan is right. It's a numbers game. Call your local media...not just television but newspapers and radio stations as well. The people that are targeting Richard Mullens are afraid of a spotlight. Draw as much attention to this as you can,and do not let them sweep this under a rug.

Thank you Logan, we are making calls all day long, but it's alot better if it's coming from inside the community.

Hi, i am mr. mullens' daughter,
i, mackenzie have had my father as a teacher for about half a year,
and as a teacher my dad has helped me in so many ways, ive always hated history until my dad taught me, i learned so much in that short period of time, then i have learned from any other teacher,
now because of all of this stuff, my dad is going to be moving soon, and i a 13 year old girl, is going to have to have her father in a different state, i recently got fed up with my school, stormed out and the next day i was checked out of school, i could not take anymore crap from the turners, and now because of them, i am home schooled.
i will not be able to play basketball,do one act play, or debate.
not like i would have wanted to in that enviornment anyway.
but its a real bummer that i can not get a real high school experience.About two years ago, i did attend that infamous church, and we left because of a problem with a member there, i have been to church camp with the preacher who is making these alligations about my father, and i can say that everyone one who attends that church is a hypocrite.
Mr.Turner has a few skeletons in his clostet, and all i can say is this backwards ass school is biteing off more then they can chew,
and justice will be served,
please help free my dad for misery.

sincerely,
Mackenzie Mullens.

i love you dad, keep your head up.

Mr.Mullens is a great person all around. Brookeland is so improfessional, hyprocritical, ignorant, and full of fakes. Ms.Connor as a councilor, no student could go and talk to her, for being so rude, and now they are trying to get rid of one of the best teachers that still stand in that school? Hes the only teacher that most kids can bond with, and get to understand. This Lacey Lowe, just comes out of no where, and starts all this crap, and nobody is going to do a single thing about it? Where the hell did she come from, and start pulling up all this, does she always go from town to town messing up schools? Way to earn your friends. Michelle Furgerson, made some great statments, what "grown" adult seriously flips off a 17 year old. If we are in the "belt" of religion, so to speak...why are we having this problem? WAKE UP BROOKELAND ISD, guess we arent as religious and great as we thought now are we? WAY TO SHOW THE BROOKELAND NAME TURNER!

Fighting about this with other students will not solve anything.

We need to support Mr. Mullins with maturity and discretion. I only went to BHS a year. So, seeing how much this enrages me, I can only imagine the anger and disenfranchisement Mr. Mullin's family and the students that grew up with him must feel.

We need to turn this anger into action, let's bypass BHS and take this issue elsewhere. I'm here for anyone who wants to get together. 409-383-7666

Jesse- I wasn't able to see your message until today, but I'll try to get a hold of you on facebook and give you a call tomorrow.

hi, Im Clint Mullens, Im the son of Richard Mullens, for those who dont know. I am currently attending college now, but I was a student in the Brookeland ISD for 5yrs or so. And I know everything I may say about my fathers situation may sound biased, solely on the fact, well that he's my father. But one thing my father always instilled in me was open-mindedness, individuality, uniqueness.

I am leaving this following comment not as the son of Mr. Mullens but as the former student of.

I was able to have my father as a teacher from my freshman, sophomore and junior year of high school. I would like to state, that from class room to classroom, the student involvement and interactions into the lessons were overwhelmingly superior and greater in my father’s class than in any other. He is a wonderful teacher, he never left anybody behind, which his students TAKS scores can attest to that.
He was loved by all of his students. (Well as it seems 101 of 103 of them do, seeing from the petition that was passed around by students of Brookeland High. And the 2 that didn’t sign? one is a school board members daughter and the other is the girl who started this whole travesty.)

My father was and still will be my favorite and the BEST teacher I have ever had the privilege of having.

Now, about "Mr.Mullens" as a man. Well that’s a whole other story. He may have been a great teacher, but he is an even GREATer person, man. He never looked down on anyone, for ethnicity, nationality or beliefs, and he instilled in me and my siblings that we need not do the same. I could go on for hours about how great Richard Mullens is as a person, teacher and father. one thing I know, is that, I model myself after my father. He, too me and many others, is the ideal "good" person. For this I hope my father is giving the justice that he so greatly deserves!
I know I speak not only for myself but for my father when I say that all the support and help is SO greatly appreciated!!
Thank YOU!!

Clint Mullens

I have started a letter so many times. I even owe one to Mr. Watkins.

Can many of you remember the phrase, "THE SILENT MAJORITY". We need to change that to the “SCREAMING MAJORITY”. We cannot stand for a few ignorant people to paint this town in such a negative light. There are many good people here.

Mr. Mullens was one teacher who sent my child home hungering for more knowledge. On her own initiative, inspired by Mr. Mullens, wanted to do more research. Got me involved in many a discussion which led late into the night. These discussions were intense, in-depth and articulate. These from a 13 year old child. I was more than impressed with her depth of knowledge on these subjects. Through her interest, I learned more. Mr. Mullens was educating me by proxy. Now that is an impressive teacher.

Now about the person who made these allegations against Mr. Mullens. I do not know her, what I do know is she is related to a person I have had problems with in the past. On one occasion she sent my daughter home with the question, “DAD, IS IT TRUE THAT BECAUSE SOMEONE IS BLACK THEY ARE MORE LIKELY TO BE CRIMINALS?” Yes, this is what Ms. Powell was teaching to a class of 4th graders. On another occasion, the same child came with another stupid statement from the same Ms. Powell. It went something like this, “IF OBAMA IS ELECTED PRESIDENT, HE WILL ALLOW MUSLIMS INTO OUR COUNTRY TO TAKE OVER AND NO ONES LIVES WILL BE SAFE.”
She was frightened. I had to take several hours to calm her down.

Consider the source. I equate these people to extremist terrorist.

Definitions from Merriam-Webster Dictionary
EXTREMIST: advocacy of extreme measures or views
TERRORIST: the systematic use of terror especially as a means of coercion

Dictionary.com
EXTREMIST: a person who goes to extremes, esp. in political matters.
a supporter or advocate of extreme doctrines or practices.
TERRORIST:a person, usually a member of a group, who uses or advocates terrorism.
a person who terrorizes or frightens others.

The best way to defeat these types, is to show them we are not afraid. Being GOD FEARING as I am, he is the only one I should fear. Small-minded persons should be shown we will not tolerate the smearing of good people.

BAD THING HAPPEN, WHEN GOOD MEN DO NOTHING!!

Let us be GOOD PEOPLE who do something. We will not stand for ignorance!

I think Mr.Mullen's is quite an incredible man and from what i know, he was one of the best teachers a student could have. Brookeland isd is extremely hypocritical and obviously unprofessional. Judging teachers on their religious beliefs? Not fair at all. This honestly just angers me that all of this is happening to Mr.Mullens. But he wont give up, and everyone behind him wont either.

I found this blog via the comment section of PZ Myer's blog Pharyngula, one of the most widely read blogs in the skeptic/freethinker community.

This story was linked by PZ, so it's now being widely circulated through the skeptical community. I'm not sure how much a bunch of atheists' attention helps the situation, but I think it should be noted that there are many people, now even worldwide, who are aware of what's going on in Brookeline.

I can also say personally, that this is certainly not the first time anyone with "dangerous" ideas has been subjected to a witch hunt, but it is certainly one of the most publicized incidents of it. A similar incident occurred in my hometown a few years ago. I can affirm wholeheartedly that what everyone's saying about the silent majority is true. Attention is the most dangerous weapon against this administration. You drag them into the media spotlight and they will scramble for cover. I'll be sure to spread this story as far as I can, because even if a bunch of people in East Tennessee can't directly influence a school board in Texas, the raw pressure of thousands of people's gazes is a force they cannot weather.

Keep us updated. I am eager to see how this turns out.

I've become aware of this story via articles on both richarddawkins.net and pharyngula. Like the previous poster, I felt it may help in some small way to show that this story is starting to receive wider attention. I'm in New Zealand, on the other side of the world fom these events, and I'm absolutely bristling at the injustice of this situation.

Education is, in my opinion, the most important issue in the modern world. Too many people reach adulthood ill-informed or misinformed about the world around them, negatively impacting every aspect of society. Good teachers are not a dime a dozen. That this small school had one teacher who was able to connect and communicate with his students - that could generate such support from them - for that they should thank their lucky stars.

Instead they squander their children's futures to protect what? An insular community structure? Their own petty illusions?

If it were the '80's hollywood fiction that it resembles it would be laughable. Here in the real world it is sickening.

I heard about Richards situation over at Richard Dawkins website and would also like to add my voice in support of him.
Coming, as I do, from Scotland I probably won't sway the views of the perpetrators of this outrage at all but I emailed the School to express my views anyway.
We're much less litigious as a rule in the UK but even if Richard has in fact resigned, it would still constitute "Constructive Dismissal" at the very least.
His story has now spread world wide and the free thinking community, I am sure, will be weighing in. As mentioned by others, the more attention this gets, the more uncomfortable the narrow minded bigots at the centre of this will become!
Everyone in a Democracy has the right to peaceful protest and to have their views aired, our ancestors, many of whom gave their lives, to ensure that we have that right would be very let down if everyone opposed to this travesty didn't stand squarely behind Richard.

I too came here via Pharyngula.

Some in the atheist communities have an attitude of "your mistake was living in Texas, Richard." To some extent I agreed until reading the comments here. Now I realize that he has already had a tremendous positive impact on many young minds. From the first line I read, it was disturbing to hear that those in charge of educating our young people feel that it is wrong or dangerous for them to be exposed to different ideas. Isn't that point of education?

The student comments here, though, are fair-minded, reasonable, and tolerant. That proves that in one way, Mr. Mullens has already won the battle with ignorant parents.

To all the students at this "school," be sure to document everything you can, like when your principle tells you that you're not allowed to make a petition. The prevailing attitude in the US is if you're under 18, you're basically property - but you DO have rights! No matter what, freedom of speech still applies to you. Use it as much as you can (without ruining your future, I'm sure nobody wants that).

Good for you kids. You make me happy. Being an atheist is not so unusual these days, and whether Mr. Mullens is really an atheist or not, the atheist calvary has been mobilized. There are actually a lot of us out there.

Good luck to Mr. Mullens, and to the poor kids!

For those who came here on a link from another blog.

Everyone

I want to thank all of you for helping to spread the word about the illegal suspension of Richard Mullen. I know that he is extremely proud of you all. He wanted to help you think for yourselves, and you are all doing just that. Jordan, in an earlier thread, said words to the effect that as the residents of Brookeland, this was an injustice that you had to take a part in correcting. I admire that statement and the courage to accept responsibility. You all are not followers but leaders and I hope you all understand, just how important this is, and how much it means to Richard, and how much it says about you.

I am asking for your help,to make sure Mr Mullens case is not swept under the rug or ignored.
I want each and every one of you to try and contact all of your friends, but especially your PARENTS, RELATIVES, even FORMER STUDENTS,who care about this issue. I want you all to call the office of Barbara Cargill, she sits on the State School Board for your district on MONDAY. She is the person we'll need to contact first. School districts are "Creatures of the State", plus this person gets alot fewer calls than your Congressman. So while it might not seem like much, if ALL of you call that office Monday, we are going to be on their radar and so will the actions of Mr Turner and the local school board. Now when you call, you will most likely not get Ms. Cargill, on the line...."almost never happens"..that's fine, leave a message with her secretary, or voice mail.Try to be quick and to the point, be polite, and just tell them the facts, avoid the nasty personal stuff. You have the truth on your side, you do not need to go negative. If you are eighteen or older, remind them that you are a registered voter. If you are seventeen or younger, tell them how long it will be before you can register to vote.
If you need to write something down before hand, fine, most of all relax and tell the truth. After you have made your statement, make sure to ask if Ms. Cargill if she will investigate this matter to ensure that Mr Mullens is being treated fairly. Ms Cargill was a teacher herself, so be sure and share some of the personal bits that you have mentioned here on this blog about Mr Mullens as a teacher. Take a few moments to look over at her website http://www.barbaracargill.com/ to get a better idea about who you are calling and what her positions are. Ms Cargill is a person of Faith, so keep that in mind, let's avoid saying anything that might be offensive to someone's religion.Religion is not the issue, the issue is justice , fairness and equality under the law for everyone.

My Thanks to Liz Ditz for posting this information.

TUESDAY, we do it all over again except with another target. Now, even if we do not change that elected official mind, you are getting their attention, and trust me, after about twenty or so calls, they are going to be curious about what this is all about. Your Principal does not want that kind of attention.

Once again, be polite, firm, but polite. A secretary can be a good friend or a terrible enemy, good manners go a long way. She is the one you need to convince.

... In all honesty I'm not sure what to say here. In the UK we're not exactly known for putting our faith first (cue a list of examples where people have been fired for religious reasons in the UK). I'm not used to the idea of religion being grounds for someone to get you fired, if only because we would deal with the arguments for and against religion during our Religious Studies lessons. A school isn't a place to make someone believe what you believe; it's there to make you think and learn. What you should get from a school is all the information, and then be allowed to make up your own mind. Some people are religious, some aren't. Believe what you want to believe, but don't take it out on other people when they decide to believe something else. I don't really know what I'm getting at here, but those people who start putting religion above education are jeopardising the future of their children. If we didn't have people like that around then I'm fairly certain those atheists who think religion is a danger to society wouldn't have much of a case. But instead the religious just keep giving them evidence. It's high time there was a change in some communities... But we all know it won't happen. If Mr Mullens ever does get back into teaching, I hope he finds a school where active debate of any and all topics is openly encouraged.

This is really stupid. Next thing you know, I'm going to get thrown out of school for being a liberal atheist. Use your head, people of Texas. You can be sure that if I had free long distance, they would be getting an EARFUL from me. I wish I had a teacher like him.

I'm glad the Neoseeker member that posted this up did. If this man isn't back in a classroom again, I'll never trust the government for not putting him back, or the public school system for not realizing their error.
